How to Make Edible Fake Blood

Halloween is quickly approaching so I thought that I would share a quick, cheap way to make really impressive fake blood.

 

The secret is using chocolate. Either chocolate sryup, coco powder, or hot chocolate powder will work.

note: use the cheap liquid food colouring and not the expensive gel concentrate that I have pictured here. The gel colour stains very easily while the regular red liquid food colouring has washed off of all my costumes in the past.

 

Pour about a cup of corn syrup into a jar.  Squeeze in some chocolate syrup (or add a tsp or two of coco powder) and then stir in red food colouring until the mixture is a deep red that is still a bit transparent like blood.

 

Next you can pour it on your neck and costume for a sticky blood effect. Or carry it around in a water bottle with you so that you can 'bleed' from your mouth when needed.  (I kept these pictures as  links to my flickr rather than posting them directly to the blog  because they are the opposite of appetizing)  You can see the edible fake blood in use here ,  here,  and here

 

While this blood is supposed to be used for costumes, I decided  to demonstrate  its gory glory on this white fondant covered cake.

 

 

If you want to use the blood on your baking, just drizzle a little bit on. It is quite sweet and will overpower the cake if you add too much.

 

Sadly, I think my cake was fatally wounded. I couldn't stop the bleeding (aka I got a little carried away).

 

Nooooooooooooooooooooooo!!

That's so rad! We're having a big Halloween party here (one for adults only and another with my daughters and their friends). I'm making candied apples with a similar red blood syrup and calling them bloddy hearts on a stick. We also have witches fingers (bread sticks with a small piece of red bell pepper as a nail), mummy dogs (hot dogs wrapped in bread), cemetery salad (greens with a garlicky dressing), and a bunch of other foods. Halloween is always our big party each year.

This looks perfect! But one question, what does it look like when it has dried on the skin? flaky, sticky, nonexistent? Please let me know! I plan on using this as an alternative for the fake blood you get at Halloween stores. Those things are pricey!
