It had been a while since my boyfriend and I last hosted brunch, so we put together another one this weekend. I had some recipes that I wanted to try and my boyfriend had been wanting to re-create a brunch dish that we had eaten at Medina Cafe in Vancouver.
Plus, brunch is awesome.. so there's always that reason.
I made some savory goat cheese and green onion mini muffins. So easy to make and slightly addictive. It's a simple muffin recipe with a blob of melting goat cheese in it which makes them savory, tangy, and a little bit sweet at the same time.
I also baked a lemon scented pull-apart coffee cake (otherwise known as delicious bread of awesome deliciousness). A sweet yeast dough is cut and spread with butter and lemon sugar so that after it bakes you can peel off the slices without having to cut the loaf.
EDIT: I'll have the bread recipe post up by Wednesday (promise) Recipe here
While it's still warm from the oven the coffee cake/bread get slathered with lemon cream cheese icing which melts into all the nooks and crannies and makes the whole thing soft and tangy and sweet.
For the main dish we roasted baby potatoes that had been tossed with rosemary, garlic, chili powder and olive oil. We had picked up some apple chicken sausages from Spolumbo's which we baked in the oven at the same time as the potatoes.
The roasted potatoes and sausages got tossed with caramelized onions, apple wood smoked cheddar (YUM), and arugula.
The mixture was then topped with a couple of fried eggs and sent out to our hungry guests (who had been munching on the little muffins).
Generally, when planning a menu it's a bad idea to compose it entirely out of recipes and dishes that you've never made before. However, we were having the brunch specifically to try new recipes so I was glad that everything turned out so well. Oooh, risky menu planning.. we're living on the edge over here.
It was baby Eden's first visit to our house, she was definitely the star attraction of the brunch...
...a fact which deeply disturbed Wellington. He has clearly grown used to being the prancy-pawed prince around here.
After all the food was eaten (literally, we managed to eat the entire coffee cake and all the muffins) there was champagne and freshly squeezed orange juice followed by more coffee and tea.
And then once every one had left it was followed by food induced comas.. otherwise known as naps.
